BUSCOT PARK CRICKET CLUB 1st ELEVEN v SHERSTON MAGNA on Sat 23 Jun 2018 at 13.00
BUSCOT PARK CRICKET CLUB Won by 16 runs

Match report Saturday dawned (sometime before 5 AM I'm led to believe!) fair and clear. Perfect weather for our top of the table clash with Sherston Magna. A call at 10 brought the bad news that Dan couldn't get out of bed due to illness and wouldn't be able to play, but Gavin Yon agreed to kindly step up to take his place.

The ground was set fair, and the crowd awaited the toss, which not surprisingly I lost again! My opposite number decided that they would like to field first, so Hamish and Charlie were given the nod to pad up. The clock stuck 1(ish), the umpire called play, and away we went. We had reached 24 as we entered the 7th over, when Pegg removed Charlie for 9. Enter skippy! 10 runs later, exit skippy! So much for that idea! Ronny's turn, and needless to say, the run rate increased as the score moved past the 100 mark. Unfortunately, we were to lose Ronny (38) at 102, followed by Hamish (28) at 105 as the wheels came off! 102 for 2 became 106 for 6 as we became becalmed, before Gavin (19) initially got us moving again, and then on his departure at 133 for 8 Thatch and Ben set off on a club record unbroken 9th wicket stand of 73 in just 9.1 overs with a good mix of quick running between the wickets, plus the boundaries. Initially I was just hoping to get past 150, then maybe 175 once we'd passed that. I just never expected to end up with over 200 to defend from the position we had been in.

Tea was taken in a much happier mood than could have been expected after 36 overs! But, Sherston had been scoring runs for fun all season, so only time would tell if it would be enough.

The new ball was taken by Thatch and myself, and we had to wait until the 6th over for a breakthrough with the score at 18. 18 for 1 became 18 for 2 though before the over was completed, and we were in the game. Fitch-Peyton and new bat Reed then started to re-build and moved the score along to 55 before they had a wobble, going from 55 for 2 to 57 for 5 (Ben taking 2, Will the other) and the game looking to be ours for the taking. Skipper Kutchera and the young Purser had other ideas, as they built a stand of what turned out to be 103 for the 6th wicket, before the re-introduction of Thatch finally removed them both in the 33rd and 35th overs. Phew! With Thatch and Ben both bowling out, the attack was taken up by Will and Gavin, with Gavin picking up the next wicket (caught and bowled) making the score 173 for 8. Will then bowled Roberts for 1 to make it 183 for 9, before having Stevens caught at square leg from a well hit pull by Ben to finally ensure victory. Double phew!

A very enjoyable days cricket, particularly given the spirit in which the game was generally played. The result could have gone either way (many times), even up until the last wicket was finally taken!
