HEYTESBURY & SUTTON VENY 2NDS v BUSCOT PARK CRICKET CLUB 1st ELEVEN on Sat 18 Aug 2018 at 13.00
BUSCOT PARK CRICKET CLUB Lost by 3 wickets

Match report Difficult journeys not matter which route was taken meant the toss and start were slightly delayed. The toss was won (becoming a bit of a habit late season!), and skippy had no hesitation in choosing to bat on what looked a good pitch.

With the Batchelor boys away at Dan's wedding and Ronny still away we were light on batting at the top of the order, so skippy opened with Hamish. With the score on 1 in the third over, skippy was on his way back to the pavilion (well, a converted container!). Tristan was moved up to 3, as Gary was later than the rest of us arriving, and with Hamish moved the score slowly along to 17 due to some tight swing bowling from Barnes and Robson, before being caught for 6. That became 28 for 3 in the 16th over with Gary's departure for 7. Enter Aaron! With change bowling, and some sublime hitting (including 26 off one over), the scoring rate moved out of second gear into overdrive! The score had moved to 114 in the 26th over before Aaron was bowled by Butler for 69 (10 fours and 4 sixes). 2 runs later, in the same over, it became 116 for 5. Will joined Hamish and they added 40 in good time taking us to 156 for 6 in the 31st over. With Hamish finally falling at 165, Thatch and Rob then added another 50 in 11 overs before Rob departed. A few more lusty blows from Thatch (44 not out) saw us end on a very respectable 230 for 8.

Tea was taken with the feeling that we had a very defendable score.

Heytesbury got off to a flying start, mainly due to poor bowling by skippy, with 50 coming up for no loss in only 7 overs. With the bowling changes, the rate was slowed a little, and a couple of wickets were taken by the deserving Aaron, but Heytesbury were still going along comfortably. Thatch bowled the big hitting Robson (36) with the score at 118, and then Mike removed the dangerous Barnes (33) and Thatch opener Kitley within a run to leave them 169 for 5. With nearly 16 overs left and only 62 needed, we were going to have to bowl them out! With Aaron bowling Butler at 182 and Mike having Christian LBW with the score at 187 our tails were up again. Could we pull it out of the bag? Unfortunately, it wasn't to be this time as we were frustrated by Pragnell and Fenwick, who acquired the remaining 44 runs.

With 33 wides, and 49 extras in total, we didn't help ourselves, but let's not take the credit away from our opponents who stuck at a positive chase.

Stats from the game ;-

Hamish Millar (now 375 runs) passed 350 1st XI league runs for the season in the game to join Ronny Fernandes (391 runs) and Dan Batchelor (369 runs) who have also scored more than 350 runs. The last time 3 batsmen scored 350 or more runs for the 1st's was in ???? (unfortunately lack of scorebooks from the 2000's means records can't be completed yet). It probably last happened in 2006 with Wade Foley (728 runs), Fergus Mitchell (493+) and probably Ronny Fernandes (scored 194 in one game + 71 in another). If anyone knows where the 2006 scorebook is, please pass to Rob Morbey. If it didn't happen in 2006, the last known time before this was in 1996 (Neil Phillips 420, Dan Baker 396 and Bob Deane 360).

Aaron Court scored 26 off one over (5 x 4's and 1 x 6) which equals the known 1st XI league record for most runs off an over, equalling Bob Deane who scored 26 (2,6,0,6,6,6) at home to Avon Sports in 1982 and 26 scored in one over between two other Courts (Liam, 6,6,6,6,1 and Jason, 1) away at Beanacre 2 in 2015. Still 12 scorebooks missing so this is the record from 26 seasons.

Mark Thatcher's 2nd wicket in this game was his 26th league wicket of the season so Mark moves into the 'Top 25' league wicket takers in a season for the 1st's, currently in 25th place. Graham Wood who also took 26 wickets in 1998 but with a higher average of 21.54 moves out of the Top 25. Julian Brown is top of the list with 48 wickets in 1992 at an average of 9.50.

Mike Heasman (21 wickets) has now joined Mark Thatcher (26 wickets) and Ben Batchelor (23 wickets) to have taken more than 20 1st XI league wickets in the season. The last time 3 bowlers took more than 20 wickets in a season for the 1st's was in ???? - the last known time was in 1996 (Julian Brown 42, Mike Heasman 28, Neil Couling 27 and Simon Minett 27). It could have happened in 2000-02, 2005-07 but unknown without the scorebooks.

The 1st's score of 230-8 is their highest losing score batting first in an away game. The previous highest was 215-9 at Devizes 2 in 2009 (lost by 4 wickets off 41 overs). The highest losing home score batting first is 261-9 against Great Bedwyn in 1986 (lost by 6 wickets off 43.2 overs). Rob Morbey remembers well this Great Bedwyn game in 1986 as it was his only ever time keeping wicket in a 1st XI league game until being called on again to keep wicket for the 1st's in 2017 & 2018.
