WESTBURY 3RDS v BUSCOT PARK CRICKET CLUB 2nd ELEVEN on Sat 11 May 2013 at 2.00
BUSCOT PARK CRICKET CLUB Lost by 25 runs
Match report
The start of the 30th season for 2nd XI in league cricket.
The record so far in 29 seasons is played 413, won 199, lost 203, abandoned 11 (actual games, not including forfeits).
2nd team league debuts for Charlie Morgan and George James.
Buscot Park 2nds finally got their season under way after having to forfeit the previous week. Our first of many long journeys this season meant a trip to Bratton to play Westbury 3rds. Rob Morbey captaining for the first time won the toss and decided to field. Buscot took the field initially with 10 players and while Ally Barron was taking the scenic route and exploring Bratton village, Buscot took the first wicket of the day. All was looking good for Buscot as Westbury were finding runs hard to come by until Westbury's Richard Mills slowly played himself in until it was becoming obvious that he is not usually a division 7 player. He finished with 93 of Westbury's 161 run total. The bowlers did well to bowl in a strong cross wind with Will Townsend as ever economical, John Slack picking up another 3 wickets, Patrick Slack convincing the captain that he had only bowled 6 instead of 8 good economical overs. Aaron Court was unlucky as his time to bowl coincided when the Westbury batsman had played himself back in to top form and was hitting the ball for regular boundaries. Special mention to the 13 year olds George James and Charlie Morgan on debut who between them bowled 7 overs and took two wickets each with Charlie taking a wicket with his first ball in mens cricket. Chasing a total of 162 runs to win would prove difficult as this week we were quite thin on batting so there was a lot of reliance on the top four. Unfortunately with the score at 32-2 it was initially a case of batting overs by Andy Morbey and Rob Morbey to bring some respectability to the score in case of the inevitable batting collapse. Buscot were still in the game with a few overs to go so with needing 33 off the final 3 overs it was now the time to have a go and take a chance. Unfortunately the 3rd wicket fell (Andy Morbey, 70 runs) at 134 to end the 102 partnership between Andy and Rob. The nominated 'big hitter' in the team (Will Townsend) soon fell and the chance had now gone with Buscot finally finishing on 136-5. The Westbury captain said after the game that their 93 run scoring batsman is usually a 1st team player who wanted to start in the 3rds to gain some confidence. Unfortunately for Buscot it was our turn to play Westbury as undoubtedly he was the only difference between the two sides (not only scoring 93 but he also opened the bowling with figures of 1-15 off 11). A good game but hopefully better luck next week....
Andy Morbey's score of 70 is his 32nd score of 50+ for the 2nd XI in league cricket (5 centuries and 27th fifty, 15 at home and 17th away) - not including 1996 as no information available for that season.
