WINSLEY 3RDS v BUSCOT PARK CRICKET CLUB 2nd ELEVEN on Sat 17 Aug 2013 at 1.30
BUSCOT PARK CRICKET CLUB Won by 24 runs
Match report
With the forecast not looking good and heavy rain to come early Saturday afternoon there was some doubt if we would make the journey to Bradford-on-Avon. The Winsley captain phoned to offer to cancel the game to save us a wasted journey. The decision would be delayed until 11.45am but after some indecision between the team and with the Winsley captain again on the phone, Rob had the final say and said we will go and see what happens. Even with Herby nowhere to be seen and making the journey with 9 players, there was not too much concern yet as hopes of any play were doubtful. The rain finally came as we arrived at the ground. Winsley won the toss and elected to bowl and the game started only 5 minutes late. Last weeks century stand opening pair, Andy Morbey and Charlie Morgan again opened but Andy was out early. Paul Farmer hit a quickfire 10 but was soon out in the 3rd over. Clive Smith, Charlie and Aaron Court all quickly followed so the score was now 22-5 with less than 8 overs gone. Rob joined Richard Gardiner at the crease just as Herby was arriving at the ground. Some rebuilding was required to avoid any similar embarrassments such as the Box game 2 weeks ago. The partnership was 23 off 9 overs which doesn't sound much but in the conditions and with the match situation it was vital runs and also time spent at the crease to allow Herby chance to take his place at number 8. Rob and Herby then put on a painstaking but valuable 27 runs from 22 overs to bring Buscot back into the game and a chance to take some Winsley wickets. John came in at 9 and put on a further 16 runs with Herby who finished 24no. 88-8 was more than we could have hoped for after being 22-5 and with a difficult long outfield making it hard to score boundaries. Weather was still looking bleak but after tea, Richard caught their captain who had made the long journey from Devon and politely pointed out to him that it is a long return journey back to Devon. Aaron bowled their number 3 before the rain came and off we went. Winsley sensed a victory as they would only need to score 50 if the rain came again. Much to the amusement of Buscot players and some Winsley players, Steve 'it's not raining' Chalke stood in the rain and tried to convince all that he isn't getting wet while everyone else were stood in the pavilion seeing rain clearly falling. Play did start again in wet conditions and Winsley scored some quick runs before John Slack took an early wicket and Paul with his first ball had their main scorer caught by a confident catch by Richard. Buscot now sensed victory in the rain and regular wickets were taken by John and Paul (3 wickets each) plus some good fielding by Patrick Slack for a run out. Winsley all out for 64 so a 24 run win. A miserable day for weather but we managed to turn the game around from what was looking like an embarrassing low score in to a good win so all went to the local pub happy that the game took place.
