Match report
Only three changes to the previous weeks team saw us at home on the warmest Saturday of the summer so far. Boomsbury won the toss and elected to bat which was no surprise as they had scored 253 and 235 in their last two games. We took the field with only 10 players as Paul Farmer was doing his proud dad duties watching his daughter singing on stage at Live at the Park. Paul will join us at 3.30pm. Will Townsend and Patrick Slack opened with Patrick taking a wicket with his 3rd ball and then again with his 7th ball. The score now 4-2. Will was bowling so tightly at the other end and didn't concede his 1st run until his 20th ball. Patrick took the 3rd wicket with his last ball of his 6 over spell to finish with 3-17 and hopefully return later for a 2nd spell. Will bowled 12 overs for only 17 runs which included 62 dot balls. Glenn replaced Patrick for his rare game and bowled well to the right hander. At the 24 over stage Paul arrived with the score on 62-3 and looking an even game at this stage. After 30 overs the score was 83-3 and the batsman were heard to say now let's go for it. It was an obvious game plan as Boomsbury had plenty of batting to come with batsman who could clear the boundary. Rob Morbey who was keeping wicket in a league game for the 1st time in probably 17 years took the catch of their opening bat from Richard Gardiner's bowling but unfortunately this then gave the chance for their middle order to come in and play their shots. Aaron Court started with a wicket maiden with the wicket of their young left hander who scored 70. The boundaries were now being scored regularly and despite John Slack taking 3 wickets at one end, Boomsbury scored 119-5 in the last 15 overs. The bowling was very mixed with such tight bowling at the beginning of the innings but hindered later on due to Paul not being allowed to bowl and Patrick unable due to a bad stomach. It shows what can be done with wickets in hand and hard hitting batsman to come. The score was 202 which would be difficult but not impossible. Herbie Townsend and Paul opened up and gave us the perfect start and put on 50 in the 15th over (Boombury were 33-3 at this stage). Paul fell to a good slip catch with the score on 56. Richard Gardiner went in and looked comfortable straight away and scored regularly before an unfortunate quick single saw Herbie back in the pavillion. Charlie Morgan hung around for a while to be in a 36 partnership with Richard. Richard realised he would need to do this himself and played some powerful drives and improvised pull shots and also hit our 1st six of the season (we've conceded 24 6's so shows how much we are missing a batsman who can play the big shots) before bring up his 50. Richard finished on 77 so apart from Herbie and Paul no other batsman reached double figures. The score finished on 158 so not a bad effort but too many runs conceded meant the score was out of reach. We've finished the half way stage of the season with 2 wins, 6 defeats and 1 forfeit. More wins should be aimed for in the second half of the season.
Richard Gardiner's score of 77 equals his best score in league cricket for the 2nd's.
Richard's score of 77 is his 2nd score of 50+ for the 2nd XI in league cricket (both at home).
