BURBAGE & EASTON ROYALS 3RDS v BUSCOT PARK CRICKET CLUB 1st ELEVEN on Sat 12 May 2018 at 13.00
BUSCOT PARK CRICKET CLUB Won by 2 runs
Match report
Well, the 2018 season finally got under way under cloudy skies (and a not too insignificant tree!) at Burbage. Introductions were made as we welcomed 2 of our newcomers, Mark Thatcher and Ben Batchelor, for their Buscot debuts.
The coin was tossed, and luckily for me (as I wasn't really sure what was best to do) I called incorrectly! On a pitch that looked very green (if a little faded), and with a woven and tufted texture, we were invited to have a bat.
Hamish and Charlie opened up, but with Charlie cracking a short ball to cover, we were soon one down with only 4 on the board. At 15 we lost Hamish too, getting a caught at mid wicket (unluckily missing the tree by a whisker!). Enter Louis! Never one to die wondering, he hit a 2 and a single (both very hard) before finally finding the neighbouring field! Needless to say, he proceeded to make it look like a very different game to the one being played by the other 21 players on his way to 96 in an innings containing 7 sixes and 6 fours. Unfortunately, around him wickets fell at all too regular intervals, as we subsided from 82 for 2 to 139 for 8, before a few late blows from Thatch finally got us to 156. Just a shame we wasted 10.5 overs! :-( Early doors I guess, but something we will have to improve on.
After a lovely tea, it was our go with the ball. At 9 for 2 after 7 overs, things started well. After 20 overs, that had become 71 for 2, and skippy was starting to think that perhaps this could be a struggle! Enter Will, who proceeded to remove both set batsman in a spell of 3 for 36 in his 9. 71 for 2 became 109 for 8, and then 129 for 9, by the 38th over. Game over then? Hmmmmmm!!!! Milne and Stewart, Burbage's 10 and 11 had other thoughts as they inched their way ever closer to the target! At the start of the last over, 4 runs were required by Burbage, and still just the one wicket by us! Luckily we had the miserly Thatch to bowl it.
Ball 1 - No run! :-)
Ball 2 - No run! :-))
Ball 3 - One run, and no 11 off strike! :-(
Ball 4 - Frustration finally pays off as Milne has a big swish in the hope of the winning boundary, only to find his stumps rearranged and victory ours! :-))))
Well stuck at guys and well done! But let's not take anything away from Burbage either. A great finish, even if my nerves were shot!
