WINSLEY 2nds v BUSCOT PARK CRICKET CLUB 1st ELEVEN on Sat 30 Jun 2018 at 13.00
BUSCOT PARK CRICKET CLUB Lost by 2 runs
Match report
Another scorching day, and another skippy loss at the toss! Unsurprisingly Winsley chose to bat on a good looking pitch with a parched outfield.
Thatch opened up with Aaron, and with 3 early wickets to the former Winsley were reduced to 22 for 3 in the 7th over. J Keepen the surviving opener was then joined by Gliddon, and they set about repairing the innings. It was the 28th over before the partnership was finally broken when Gliddon was run out with the score on 120. Good partnerships, revolving around Keepen who finally fell bowled by Thatch on 91, saw the score progress to 224 for 7 at the end of the 45 overs. Given the pitch, and the fast outfield, this was a total that seemed very 'getable'.
Tea was taken, along with a little footballing World Cup distraction before Hamish and Dan started us off in pursuit. An opening stand of 86 ensued in relative comfort before Hamish was caught off skipper Griffiths for 28. A quickfire 21 from Ronny helped progress the score onto 129 before he was bowled by slow left armer C Keepen in the 28th over. Ben joined his brother and together they then moved the score past 200. At 201 though, the returning pacey Waight managed to get one past Dan to bowl him tantalizingly close to his century on 98. Five and a half overs remained and 24 more runs were required. Surely it wouldn't be too demanding? Unfortunately, wickets started to tumble far too frequently, and before we could blink we were 207 for 7, then 213 for 8 as we seemed to lose the plot! The collapse was finally completed with a run out (with 3 runs needed off 2 balls, though that ball was being called wide which would have left us needing 1 to tie, 2 to win off 2 balls!) just 2 runs short.
Firstly, credit has to be given where due to the Winsley 'death' bowlers Waight and Fenton who bowled very well, but the thing that cost us most was the lack of composure when nothing more than sensible batting was needed.
Oh well. It's all part of the learning curve! Let's make sure we put it right next week.
Stats from the game ;-
Dan Batchelor's score of 98 is his highest in league cricket for the 1st's beating his previous highest score of 92. Dan's score of 98 is a new 1st XI record against Winsley beating Neil Phillips 68 at home to Winsley in 1998.
Losing by 2 runs equals the 1st's lowest losing margin in an away game equalling losing by 2 runs away at Marshfield in 1991 (Marshfield 161ao off 45 overs, Buscot Park 159-8 off 45 overs) and also by 2 runs at Calne in 2000 (Calne 165-7 off 45 overs, Buscot Park 163ao off 44.5 overs).
Scoring 222 is the 1st's 7th highest score in an away game batting second and is the 1st's 'highest' losing run chase since scoring 248-6 at home to Beckington in 2009 and losing by 5 runs.
The 1st's 'highest' losing run chase in an away game is scoring 233-7 at Cooper Avon Tyres in 2003 and losing by 14 runs.
